Newspaper Explanation 

One prop we used for our opening sequence was a newspaper article with the headline on the front page of Megan Potter missing. As a group, we used a variety of different techniques to foreshadow various themes and concepts about the film, just through the frontage. 

One element we used to make promote a key them is the used of a picture. We used a picture of Megan against a white background, however we took in such a way that it was as if it was holiday picture. We have James Potter’s arm around Megan to make it look more natural, however this could also connote to the audience that she is submissive to her husband and that James consistently desires to have constant control over Megan, which only feels the plot of our opening sequence furthermore. 

Another technique we used to used to portray certain element of our opening sequence  is the use of language. The use of the adjective “concerned” before Megan’s sites Abigail but not before James’ name signifies to the audience that something isn't quite normal and that there is a reason why James is not described as concerned or worried in any certain way. By doing this, we give the audience a feeling of tension and suspense, but without giving too much information away, which may intrigue them into wanting to watch more. 

Another language feature we used for this newspaper is the use of a simple quotation from James. We stated that he said “I just want her back safely”. This in itself is very simple statement considering the importance and emotional significants of the situation, which implies to the audience that he is just saying it to sounds less antagonistic and that e is trying to cover up something. 

Finally, the last technique we used is yet another language feature. in the newspaper, it says that the sister contacted the police and media about the missing woman, rather the the husband who lives with her. This is done to send a message to the audience that James was not planning to call the police due to the fact that he is the one who is keeping her captive in the cellar. The fact that the sister was the one who contacted the police suggest t the audience that the husband was not too pleased/keen on getting the media involved as it increases the chances of humbling caught.
