Based on the recent results from our questionnaire that we handed out to various people of different ages, social classes and other demographic factors, we transformed those results into pie charts to represent those results clearly. After doing this, it helped us t make vital decisions on various different elements of our opening sequence. However we only took into consideration the key question that were associated with costume, plot, lighting, props and representation.
5.) Our opening sequence plot: a young couple are married and live together. The woman is a personal assistant and the man is a successful businessman, and that is how they met. However, the woman has cheated on her husband with her new boss and the husband has found out. He is keeping her hostage in their cellar underground, but the rest of society believe she is just gone missing and the man is pretending to not know where she is.
On a scale of 0-5 (o being never and 5 being 100%), what is the likelihood of you wanting to watch this film?
Due to to 30% giving our opening sequence concept a 5/5, 30% giving the concept 3/5 and 40% giving it a 4/5, we used this information and stuck to our idea. The idea was liked by all of the people we asked, which gave us further confidence to stick to our gut and continue with it.
6.) Which costume do you feel would look more psychopathic for the male character (husband)?
One of the main objective of our opening sequence was to represent our male character as suspiciously and mysteriously as we could. We wanted to be represents him in a very psychopathic way, hence why we asked which costume would connote what we wanted. 70% voted for an all black costumer, and many described it as creating an "enigmatic" character. This links to Roland Barthes' theory of enigma codes, which states that good narratives contain enigma codes that intrigue audiences. That is what we wish to achieve.
7) Which costume do you feel represents the female character (wife) as promiscuous the most?
There was a clear majority on which costume the people we questioned thought was going to represent our female character as promiscuous. We wanted to make it clear that she was unfaithful, hence why we wanted to dress her in a colour that would signify to the audience "danger".
8) Which main title do you feel fits best according to the plot of the story?
As a group, we faced major difficulty establishing an appropriate title for our film. One group member wanted to call it Deception, whilst others wanted to call it The Cellar. However we wanted to name our opening in such way that doesn't give away too much of the plot. Therefore, we completely used our questionnaire results to develop a title.
11) What you feel there is anything we could do to improve our idea for better locations, further elements to add the plot etc.
- Don’t give too much away in the opening
- Make sure she looks realistic eg makeup smudged
- Don’t clean the cellar before filming in it
- Enthusiastic actors
- Use dark lighting in the cellar
We feel that these additional comments were the most important comment out of the whole questionnaire. These were open ended questions and they really helped us to establish key things we needed consider when filming. We "didn't give too much away" but not revealing the husbands face completely until the cellar scene. We made the make up look realistic by smudging the female actors make up. \we also assigned our 3 most enthusiastic members to participate in our opening sequence so that the acting was to a good level. Finally, we made sure we used a very low lighting to create suspense all and around the cellar.
